You Can Do Anything, If You Put Your Mind To It

Do you ever do something that you don’t normally do and it really surprises you?

I recently experienced this and I wanted to share it with you. For me, this blog is something that I can look back on in the future and I think this would be a nice post to read back on.

For those of you who may not know, I really really really want to go into the fashion industry when I am older so for my work experience I thought it would be quite cool to work with a designer. This designer, Freya Von Bulow, specialises in making garments out of paper so she set me the challenge of making a garment out of paper. And I did and I was very proud of it.

You may have already seen photographs of it if you follow me on Instagram (@indi_stilling) and even now I can’t believe that I made it because I have never done anything like that before. I have never really used a modelling stand or even made any clothes out of paper. I always draw my designs first before making them so I was kinda thrown in the deep end with this because I had no idea how to even start. But once I had started the ideas just kept on flowing and after like 7 hours I had produced this dress. When she first told me that that was what I was going to be doing I was like “omg I have no idea what I am doing, help.” And 7 hours later this is what I produced.

This is mainly a motivational post for y’all not just me showing off about this dress because I learnt that you can do more than you think you can. You can do better in exams than you think you can. You can run further and faster than you think you can. You can make a better dress than you ever thought you could. I could go on for a while. However you can’t do any of this unless you put your mind to it and have the motivation and determination to do it. You have to put the effort it and revise to do well in those exams. You have to have the determination to run that far. You have to believe that you can make a beautiful dress.

I’m being serious when you say that you can do anything when you put your mind to it. If you really want something then go out and get it! Don’t sit on your bum and expect all these amazing results to just be handed to you because you have to work. I spent 7 hours on this dress and I was constantly changing things and accidentally ripping it but I was determined to produce something amazing and I think I did.

A big factor is motivation. I had someone tell me to make this dress cause otherwise I wouldn’t have done it so all you need is a little push of motivation to do something amazing. If it’s an exam then have a pep talk with yourself about how much you want this grade and how all that hard work is going to pay off (thinking about all you guys doing GCSEs and A Levels, you’re gonna do great!). It’s kinda the same with running, you need to tell yourself that you are going to run that distance and how when you get home you can have a nice cold shower.

By doing all this you can do so many new exciting things that you never thought you would be able to do otherwise. Another example for me is that I have always wanted to skateboard. So I went out and bought a penny board and I rarely go out on it but I am determined to get good at it so I am going to. Even if it takes a lot of time I don’t mind.

Have you done anything recently that surprised you? Is there anything that you are really determined to learn/do?
